Gold is refined by fire in a crucible, to bring to the surface and remove properties of impurity from the element. There is no greater process of refinement for the soul than the real threat of separation from one's own body. In a world that is impure and therefore passing away, the desire to stay and hold on to those things, is a clear indication of an imperfect being. Shadrack, Meshach and Abed-nego's willingness to be separated from this mortal world provided them a moment of immortality. The physical fire could not harm them because God's spiritual flame had gotten their first, to produce in them pure gold; nothing to be removed or separated, nothing to burn. They identified with the Word of GOD, therefore the pre-incarnate Christ identified with them; with HIS very presence.
